Single Release: "Quick Advice" by Andrew Brantley
About a month ago I was lucky enough to get to play drums on a few songs for singer/songwriter and Athens, Ga native Andrew Brantley.
I first became aware of Andrew from hearing about his band The Orange Constant - Andrew is the lead singer, and one of the guitarists and primary songwriters for the band. If you haven't listened to The Orange Constant, you should definitely check them out!
Andrew reached out to me in October to let me know that he was thinking about releasing some solo material and was interested in having me play drums.
Over the next few months we met up a couple of times and Andrew showed me some different songs he'd been working on and I threw out some ideas for drum parts. Andrew's songs remind me of Jack Johnson, but with a little more soul.
Recording Day
We ended up recording at The Rabbit Hole. It was Andrew, me, and Nickalous Benson on bass (The Orange Constant).
The Gear
I ended up using my Gretsch USA Custom maple kit and my 6.5x14 Supraphonic snare. For cymbals I used my 15" Zildjian K Light hi hats, 19" Zildjian K Dark Thin crash, and 22" Istanbul Agop Om ride. I also found a hi hat tambourine in the studio that I used on both songs we cut that day.
The Process
Quick Advice wasn't originally one of the songs that Andrew talked to me about recording. Andrew showed it to me and Nick while we were setting up and asked us if we wanted to give it a shot - we loved it and took on the challenge! After a few run-throughs to nail down the parts, we cut our tracks together to give the song an organic feel.
The Result
I'm super happy with the parts that we played and the song as a whole. The 2nd verse is my favorite part of the song. I love how the delivery of the lyrics fits together with the bass line and drum groove.
I'm happy to announce that Andrew Brantley's song "Quick Advice" is now available for purchase and streaming on all the hip channels!
