MY PROCESS

Step 1: Setting Up

Before I track anything I make sure I understand your vision for your song’s drum track (performance notes, drum tones, dynamics, etc.), get your song file, and set up my drum session to record.

STEP 2: Tracking

I will record a few different takes and send you 1-3 takes that I think are great. I’ll send you a rough stereo mix of my drum take(s) with your song so that you can listen and hear how everything sounds.

step 3: Revisions

You can give me feedback on the drum sounds, parts, dynamics, and anything else you’d like for me to change. We’ll revise until you have a drum track that you and your artist LOVES.

Step 4: Delivery

Once we’ve settled on a drum take that you love, I’ll make any final drum edits, add any percussion overdubs that we think can elevate the song, and bounce out your final stems.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • A: I typically work with producers in the folk, roots, country, singer/songwriter genres. Mixing live drums is a very unique skill, and most of the time DIY artists don’t have the necessary experience to mix live tracked drums well.

    If you are self producing, or working on genres like: pop, EDM, hip hop, or metal, I find that with modern technology, drum samples are going to be easier, cheaper, and less time consuming and get you a better end result.

  • A: In order for me to track drums, it’s best if you have a fully written song (you aren’t going to change the arrangement), and a scratch track that was recorded and edited to a click (vocals, and at least one instrument like guitar or piano). You also need to have some idea about the direction of your song and what you want the drums to sound like.

    If the instruments are not performed and edited well, I can just perform my drums to the click, but a well performed/edited scratch track will make my job easier and make sure you get a well performed, musical drum take.

    A sample/demo drum idea can be a helpful reference if you have specific parts and tones you want me to emulate. You can even record a voice memo of you beat boxing a drum part over your song if programming drums isn’t your thing!

  • A: I’m usually able to turn around a first take within 2 business days. I offer up to two revisions if the first take isn’t exactly what you want. Once we have a take that you love, it usually takes me an additional 24 hours to do final overdubs, editing, and file uploading.

  • A: I am usually able to get what producers are looking for in the first take I send, but I offer up to two rounds of revisions if necessary. If we still aren’t nailing your vision after two revisions, we can keep working on your song, at an additional cost.

  • A: I am in the studio working during normal business hours. I usually respond to revision requests and communication within 24 hours during weekdays.

  • A: Everything I do as a remote session musician is Work For Hire, meaning I don’t take any royalties or make any claims to ownership of the song or my drum recording(s). Once I am paid, you own all rights (commercial and otherwise) to your songs and my drum recordings. I am happy to sign a work-for- hire agreement if that is necessary.

  • A: Yes. I want to set you up as best as I can to get the best mix possible. In addition to drum stems, I also send a stereo WAV file of my drum mix for you to use as a reference, or you can even use it as is in your mix! I also can provide you with as much information as I can about what each individual stem is and how I used it in my drum mix.

    If you run into problems or questions later on in the production process related to drums, I am happy to try and help answer questions, resend files, or fix any problems on my end.

    I also offer mixing services and am happy to discuss mixing your song if you’re interested.

  • A: I do at times program electronic drum loops and samples to help add interesting layers to my drum performances, but I don’t offer full drum programming as a service.

    There are lots of resources out there (Logic Drummer, Drum machines, Superior Drummer, Etc.) that I don’t have much experience with because, you guessed it… I usually just track live drums.
